Detroit Lions Ben Johnson Jared Goff have recipe for success

Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson wants Jared Goff to keep his foot on the proverbial gas pedal going into the final three weeks of the 2022 regular season.

It’s vital for Goff to continue taking care of the football which he has excelled in these last weeks. In fact, the veteran Detroit signal-caller has not thrown an interception for six consecutive weeks. He’s the first Lions passer to make it six consecutive starts without committing any turnovers.

In that time, the Lions are now 5-1. Their only loss was against the Buffalo Bills Thanksgiving.

Playing clean football has been the key to Goff & Co.’s recent stretch success .. Johnson isn’t going to stop being aggressive in his play-calling.

“Every night, he will come up, and it will just be me and him. We’ll talk through each play and discuss the intent and what we’re trying to do,” Johnson said Wednesday of Goff. “In some ways, he can call the game more aggressively and he understands when it comes in, ‘Okay. I’ve got to push this thing down, if the look presents itself.’ But, Johnson said that Goff has done a great job of grabbing those opportunities when they present themselves. He’s also found completions on the ones he hasn’t thrown. It’s allowed us to call more aggressive down the field plays, especially in the Jacksonville and Minnesota games. We know he’ll find a completion if it’s missing and keep us going. To Johnson, maintaining Goff’s high-level of play and that of the offense is key.

” “The sacks and turnovers, let’s keep those going, because that’s the recipe to success right now for me,” Johnson said. “So, it’s been giving us a chance every week.”

If Johnson & Co. want to increase the number of big plays on offense, a good idea would be to work on building the chemistry between Goff and rookie wideout Jameson Williams.

Going into the Lions’ Week 16 contest with the Carolina Panthers, Goff and the former Alabama Crimson Tide speedster have connected on just one pass. It came in Week 14 against the Minnesota Vikings, and ended up amounting to a 41-yard touchdown for Detroit.

The two failed to make a connection on a shot to reach the end zone in the second quarter against New York. This past Sunday, the Jets. Johnson said that Johnson’s focus now is on building trust between the veteran signal-caller, and the first-year pass catcher.

” “It’s a weekly effort, and I think it’s coming along,” Johnson stated. We push Jamo a bit more each week in terms of the routes that we ask him to run, not only for the game but also for Jared’s development and his chemistry with him. We want to see what he can do and what he is comfortable with after that injury. We’ll continue to see a growing relationship between these two. It’s just time on task.”

The Lions came out on top, 20-17, in their aforementioned Week 15 matchup with the Jets. It was their sixth win in seven games, helping them reach. 500 (7-7) for the first time in 2022. It’s been a remarkable turnaround for a Detroit team who started the season with 1-6. Aaron Glenn, Lions defensive coordinator, believes that the team’s greatly improved play is due to the players understanding the culture and identity of Dan Campbell-led squad.

“Guys know exactly who we are as defense and culture, and what we’re trying achieve,” Glenn said Wednesday. It’s two things that are missing in football, I think. These offensive gurus and defensive gurus could be a great combination. Culture and identity are important. If you bring that to the table, and you guys understand it, it will create a winning environment.
