Google has expanded options for keeping personal information private from online searches. The company stated earlier this week that they will allow people to request more information, such as phone numbers, email addresses, and physical addresses, to be removed from search results.
The new policy also allows the removal of other information that may pose a risk for identity theft, such as confidential log-in credentials.
The company said in a statement that open access to information is vital, “but so is empowering people with the tools they need to protect themselves and keep their sensitive, personally identifiable information private.”
“Privacy and online safety go hand in hand. It is important to control where your sensitive, personally identifiable information is located when you use the internet,” it stated.
Google Search had previously allowed people to request the removal of highly personal content that could cause harm. This includes information that has been removed by doxxing or personal details such as bank account numbers or credit card numbers that could be used to commit fraud.
But information is appearing in unexpected places and being used in new ways, so policies must evolve, the company stated.
Having personal contact information online can also pose a risk. Google stated that it has received requests to remove such content.
It stated that it will review all content on a web page in response to such requests. This will prevent it from limiting access to useful information, or content on public records on government websites or other official websites.
” It is important to note that Google Search will not remove content from the internet. This is why you may want to contact the hosting site directly if you feel comfortable doing so.
