Sean Payton In, Mike McCarthy Fired? Dallas Cowboys Odd Rumor via PFT (Again)

FRISCO — The NFL Coaching Carousel just started spinning, yes. But why is Mike McCarthy being given a horsey?

” Rumours are flying! ”

“Gossip is making the rounds! ”

“The chatter is back! ”

For some, the concept of the Dallas Cowboys firing coach McCarthy and hiring Sean Payton is not “back” … because it never left. ProFootballTalk.com is one of the places where it has established permanent housekeeping. Mike Florio, the publisher, is involved in an intense relationship with the concept.

“The rumors are making the rounds, again,” Florio wrote before Saturday’s 40-34 Dallas win over Philly. “Yes, the chatter has returned. If the Cowboys finish with, say, a one-and-done postseason, the thinking is that owner Jerry Jones would potentially pull the trigger, finally, on hiring Payton.”

“Chatter.”

“If. ”

“The thinking is.”

“Potentially. ”

Lotsa soft edges on that “reporting. ”

And now more of the same, as on Monday, Denver fired Nathaniel Hackett, and while here at CowboysSI.com our insta-reaction was to point out the year-ago candidacy of Dan Quinn in Denver … somehow the internet has tied Hackett’s firing to …

Mike McCarthy’s firing?

There are no secrets here and there are no scoops here and there are no revelations here. Sean Payton, the former coach of the New Orleans Saints, has a long-standing relationship with the Jones family. We have predicted for years that he will one day be employed by the Cowboys.

That hasn’t changed. We don’t believe it will ever change. Except …

Payton, who is now a happy Southern Californian while he spends the season on FOX TV. The Chargers job and the Rams job , if they were open, would, we believe, be added to his wish list. He will be pursued by other teams, and, as Florio is sure to know there’s “chatter” in many NFL cities, including Denver. … but we don’t believe Payton is keen on the idea.

Is Payton a fan of the idea Dallas? If so, that’s not a new idea.

We have made it clear: If the Cowboys lose these playoffs in the exact same manner in which they lost a year ago – 1) by an upset, 2) by being pushed and 3) due to a penalty plague – there will be voices in this building calling for change.

We’ve also made it clear that Jerry Jones is very pleased with his relationship to McCarthy, who in turn has the respect and ear of Dak Prescott.

Furthermore, while Payton is considered “hot,” his impressive resume is actually quite similar to that of McCarthy.

And another thing: To hire Payton while he is still under contract with Saints, any team would have to trade with New Orleans in order to acquire his rights. Last time, Jon Gruden was awarded two first-round picks and two second-round selections.

Is Payton so good that he merits $100 million guaranteed for five years (speaking of “gossip”) and so good that he can improve a future cap-strapped Cowboys team without the benefit of any draft picks?

All things considered, “The McCarthy Hot Seat” campaign is a sham. In the last two seasons, McCarthy’s Cowboys have 23 wins – Dallas’ best mark since the Super Bowl teams’ era 1994-95. Dallas also has back-to-back playoff berths now for the first time since 2006-07.

McCarthy is short of doing nothing to make negative headlines. Maybe the NFL world owes him to “chatter” about it – especially with Hackett being the one who has been strapped to a horsey, and who’s actually lost the job.
